This is an audio only version of the Slow Speed play-along
- Full Speed Play Along (MP3)
The full speed audio only play along track
- Jam Track In G
This is the jam track I was playing over. When you have the solo down, try playing it against the band without my help.
- The TAB for the solo example.
This is the TAB and standard notation for the solo. There may be a scale pattern or 2 that you are not familiar with but you won't need them just to learn this solo. In the full version of the 5 Easy Blues Solos course there is an encyclopedia of scale patterns and everything is covered thoroughly.
One of the things you want to do before you even really get into this is just listen to the full speed (and maybe even the slow speed) play-along tracks to really get the melody in your head.
It's really helpful if you can hum along with it first, then try to learn the notes. And there is nothing faster than an 1/8th note and that's on purpose.

September 21, 2013Hey Griff, Really nice lead and examples but I am a Dunderhead and am more visual. Can you please post the entire tab? This would help me greatly in learning this fantastic solo. Peace Tim

March 12, 2015Hi Grif
Your coaching is extremely helpful, I was wondering if you would consider changing the camera angle to face more toward the tuning pegs on the guitar so that I or we could see the tips of your fingers, and where they actually touch the fret board.
Thanks Peter

January 16, 2019EASY PEEZY! GLAD YOU PUT THE TABS THERE. JUST LISTENING, I GOT IT. IF YOUR EVER GET A CHANCE, GET THE CD WITH CLAPTON AND BB KING, “ON THE ROAD”. I SWEAR, THIS SOLO, SOUNDS JUST LIKE WHAT BB PLAYS IN ONE OF THE TUNES ON THE CD. ERIC DOSE A GREAT JOB OF COMPING WITH HIM. SO I’LL LISTEN TO THIS AND THEN ONCE I HAVE THE SOUND IN MY HEAD, ITS ALL READY FOR ME TO USE THE TABS AND GET THIS SOLO DOWN, PLUS I SAW MANY OTHER LICKS TO PLACE IN WITH A TRIPLET.
I THINK IT WOUD SOUND GOOD IN A SLOW BLUES. THANKS GRIFF, AS ALWAYS YOU GAVE ME SOME INSITE!

January 26, 2023Hey Griff, I though your slow play along was awesome for me as a never played the guitar before other than trying to make any cohesive sound out of it, I am putting my foot in the water though, so thank you for this email and clip to watch, I guess some may forget you actually provided it at no cost and very generous on your part, thank you!

May 4, 2016Practice time is something you schedule. If you try to “find” time to practice/play, something will always come along to interfere. Schedule the time and that makes it a part of your routine. You schedule the time you go to bed, the time you go to work, a doctor’s appointment; TV programs are scheduled, too, as are many things. Do the same with practice/playing time and it’s always at say, 7pm every day for a half hour.
Rod Woolley
February 24, 2021I recommend you have an acoustic guitar on a portable guitar stand placed somewhere conspicuous that you pass by quite often. Then you will pick it up for a short practice whenever you are reminded by seeing the guitar and the urge takes you. Having a set schedule holds no appeal for me now I am retired, but perhaps that would work well for folks who have to go out to work.

May 3, 2016Thanks for all you send out. I have 5 courses already and have come to realize at 70 I’m not going to be able to play multiple triplets flawlessly. Still working on BGU solo 4 at about 90%. I know the counting is something I need to make myself do, but I get bored with it quickly. When I play acoustic and sing the words to the song, it seems so much easier to get the timing right, no problem. Quicker results, of course I don’t play real fast songs. Zac Brown’s Knee Deep is about as fast as I have learned to play. That Boom Boom Boom video you sent out recently was fun to learn.
Pete
July 24, 2021Am 72, but still only 22 in many ways. Been play’n since I was 13, but still learning a lot thanks to Griff.

October 7, 2013Just a thought; I read and saw a study done on those who play and study music that they are likely to keep an active and more productive mind than those who don’t in their later years. 8 1/2 yrs at the age of 51, I began learning guitar. I couldn’t keep or even knew what a 4/4 beat was. I studied each day and would play along at our church with the youth band just to help out and to learn to play along during their practice time. After learning enough basic chords and getting some timing down, I would get our churches worship band sheet music and sit back stage and try to play along. It took awhile, but I am happy to say that I now play every Sunday as an official worship team member for the past 5 yrs. Every day, I try to practice 30 minutes, putting aside TV, etc. It’s my “down time” I call it. I continue to learn and study and absorb as much as I can. Griff’s BGU course and his other DVD’s along with his free teachings have helped me to open up more and gain the confidence I need to challenge myself to be a better player. Don’t get discouraged Mr. Roggero! We all start off as beginner’s, and while I’ll never be a Griff or a Clapton, I feel blessed to have the love for music and to be able to reach for my guitar and find peace through music.
Rod Woolley
February 24, 2021Sounds like the hymns in your church might get a little “blusified” with a few Clapton licks thrown in between verses!

September 21, 2013Seems like every video I check out now seems to suggest (…at least subliminally) ‘…see there!… this is what you’ve been neglecting!’ So for me, it’s gonna be a “head-first” dive back into SWS! The jewel I carried away from the main video lesson was how to facilitate switching from major to minor runs, with the change from index finger to ring finger (,,,or vice versa) to commence the run.
“So what have you been doing with the rest of your study time, Mr. Tarquinnian?” Well, truthfully Teach,…some advanced chords and rhythm techniques, and an exploration of Dorian, Aeolian, Phyrgian, and Mixolydian modes and techniques for lacing them through the major and minor pentatonic/blues scales.
I will however, as stated above, re-commit myself to the SWS work, as it is indispensable for getting to where I want to…and need to be as a guitarist.

September 21, 2013The essence of BB done in a manner which will help you to become more musical in your lead playing. I see how it ties into bgu, major blues scale soloing and 4 note solos. Fantastic! Will be on the lookout.

September 21, 2013Love the blues. As always Griff , you inspire us all as guitar players. Keep up the great work that you do. It will help future guitarist to believe in their dreams to one day hear themselves playing the blues as inspired as you are to teach it. I Love your courses. BGU is great.

September 21, 2013Hi Griff – I do not know where you find the time to produce this top of the charts videos. I signed up for your Blues Course a few months ago and never expected such continual support.
Many thanks from one of your fans – across the pond – in Oxfordshire, UK.
I know you have a lot of things in your working week – but could you squeeze in some music theory. I have a real problem translating all the quarter notes, triplets, etc into the “One and a two and a three and a four”. I end up having to listing to each music bar on the video over and over to get it right. If I could figure out the timing from the music tabs that would be a huge step forward.
Keep up the great work.

September 21, 2013After two years of lessons and going nowhere I am starting over at square 1. (this is a pick, ect.)this lesson renewed my will to try.Thanks.

September 21, 2013Another great lesson! It’s very complete with the video, audio and backtrack. You do a great job of making it simple yet challenging. September 22, 2013Yes, this is a great lesson on the style of BB King. But, along with the lead it would certainly make me a better guitar player if you included a 12-24 bar video example of how to play the rythum guitar which is on the backing track. (Showing the intro & outro as well). If you are using a backing track from your 29 examples of rythum guitar course, please reference which rythum example you are using. In becoming a well rounded guitar player, it would be nice to be always be taught the rythum guitar part which accompanies each lead guitar example you present us in your various lessons whether in a purchased course or sent out via email.

September 23, 2013If you keep teaching, I will continue to keep learning….I enjoyed this lesson and the way it was presented.
You don’t teach to copy, but teach how to play.
I read this one somewhere this week (probably FB) – “Your left hand is what you know and your right hand is who you are.”
(quote is from Roy Bookbinder via Frank Goodman)
What I know, is what you have taught me. My plans from there is to let out who I am.
Starting to get excited and having fun!
Thank you.
Robert Pickett
September 23, 2013I think this will be a good thing for me. As I am already a guitar player, I’ve never really played much blues. So this is a whole new avenue for me. It’s kinda like starting all over again except you already got a jump on the learning curve. I;ve already learned one thing, is that you don’t want to do this on an acoustic .
It will kill your fingers. So I went and got an electric guitar. lol

September 24, 2013Awesome lesson….one can see how the 4 note solo pattern really comes into play…For intermediate and beginner players we need more of these type lessons – helps us feel good about our learning and playing abilities. It is cool to play a little BB King like, I’m all in – sign me up for the course!

September 24, 2013Really great stuff Griff. The mixture of textures by moving from major to minor patterns really helps to understand how to think about and get to know the music thoroughly.

September 24, 2013Hi Griff,
Thanks
Haven’t got the solo itself down yet but I really like the two note chord rhythm track. I got a huge amount out of listening to this and trying to play it verbatim – its not quite straight out of your BGU lessons…, you are using a few chord variants throughout which sounds great and has turned on the lights to a whole new area of creativity for me where less is more.
Stephen Ingram
September 24, 2013Thanks Griff, my LP IceT is called Lucille for this one. How about a ‘Thrill Is Gone’ type lesson? I was listening to it this morning and it made me feel ‘Completely Well’- that is epic

October 9, 2013Thanks for everything Griff.
Got to say though, that I understand what you are teaching but why does my mind feel more blown away after watching this lesson? Maybe a count pattern with the tabs would help. I guess I can do it myself but run the risk of getting it wrong. Keep up the good work and thanks again.

October 10, 2013Griff, I’m also a pretty old guy. I’ll be 65 years old in November. BAck in high school, I used to be in a band, and we used to play surf music. The way you teach your listners about playing the “blues” is pretty easy to follow. You are a very good teacher, in my opinion. I enjoy watching and listening to you play the …”blues”.

October 13, 2013Interesting, noticed in my early years trying to copy some of the Eric Clapton bluesbreakers that he would go “out of the box” as you say, in those days pre internet it was listen to a bit on the old casette tape then rewind and try and work it out and quite often stop and say “where the hell is he going now?” its starting to make sence now many years later, great lesson Griff keep up the good work.

May 4, 2016It’s a trip in the Wayback Machine. A lesson from back when you had hair! As usual, thanks for the free course teaser Griff. I’m pretty backed up on BGU courses that I haven’t finished or even started. This course has been on my wish list for a while.

May 4, 2016Griff that was great. I printed it along with so many others although listening I can almost get in time by watching you and listening. I am trying to learn how to count though. The timing is KING ..right? Well after I go threw it a few times in sections, that is best for me anyway. But I will know on the 10th if I have any money this month as well as other months I am usually broke before I even get my mear 720.00 but it is better than living under a bridge… I always look forward to your lessons in the emails. I always get something new and sometimes cannot keep up with my TREASURE CHEST MATERIALS…I am so glad that I found you….

September 11, 2017Liked the King licks. Went to allot of concerts. Till the last one at the Russian river all he could do was sit an no longer play. Thank you for the memories. Great hard working road traveling guitar man. Saw the original Tan Lucial guitar 335 Gipson. Hollow body. When he changed to enclosed A series black body, it changed his tone allot, but no longer had feed backs. Interesting stuff.

August 15, 2018Hi. This is all great. Newbie here. Just starting out. Something I never got an answer to that I am confused about is above the tab for the solo are chord references i.e G7 etc. Is someone else (i.e the band) playing that in the background or is that an indication that that is the key the piece is in or both? Can someone clarify and please forgive my ignorance!!!!

January 24, 2019Hi Griff,
I’m always having trouble counting. Would it be possible
to put “timing marks” i.e. 1,2,3,4 or 1, +, 2, +,3 etc with the notes under the correct count on the tab PDF’s?
As always, Great Lessons!

March 8, 2019Griff, Thanks for a “Great” Lesson Package. I’d like to order your higher end one but I’d like to ask just one question 1st. The backing tracks, that you get in the package, are they the “SAME” tracks that you hear in all 5 of the Lessons. I especially like the one in Lesson #2 so I want to make sure its included. Thank You and I’ll order as soon as I hear back from you.

March 25, 2019Ugh, you bastard Griff. In a day and a half I pretty much have nailed this first solo. The best production I have ever been through. Now I HAVE to get the rest of them. I truly appreciate such a nice lesson to get me out of the rut I was in. 67 in a week and I can still learn. The second 12 bars were not done as clearly as the first, but I did get it. Not much vibrato, yet, but I will get that to with time. <3

August 19, 2019Hi Griff, you really are a great teacher, I’ve been playing (trying to play) guitar for a long time, I’m 72. My wife encouraged me to take the plunge and invest in BGU, and I haven’t regretted it for a minute. Thanks for making me a better player.

March 18, 2020Nobody played or at present had or has his style.
I did spend a year on getting his notations booked into my brain. He told.me once just slow it down.
He played from his heart mind and sole. And new every note on the fret board at any fraze of bending. He was the master of his guitar.

June 6, 2021Hey Griff,
Thank you kindly for making this blues lesson available to folks like me.
I took up the guitar last October fully knowing that it would not be easy for me but beings that I’m retired I’d have some time to devote to it. I had no idea how fast I’d love it. I’m not very good but all things considered, I’ll get there. Just need to get my hands on a better guitar.
Love the channel
Richard Sigmen
July 30, 2021I appreciate the simple way in which you lay out the progression. I will keep trying, I am a little more than a beginner but still struggling to get the paratonic down. I play some picking but mostly cords.
Thank You
Rick

September 9, 2021I’m closing in on 73 and enjoying retirement, especially learning guitar. The recent purchase of a 2001 Strat has really upped my motivation. All those years in Jr. High and High School band significantly helps with the counting and basic music theory. I’m in full agreement with Griff. Count religiously until a metronome lives in the back of your head. It really makes everything so much easier. I don’t know who said it, but “if you can’t sing it or hum it, you can’t play it” becomes even more true as every year passes. And, before I forget, Welcome to Texas, Griff.

September 9, 2021“Leave A Comment And Tell Me What You Think…” I think you’re a genius Griff. There’s only two of you on the big bad blues Internet that I would say that about. Thanks for helping us learn in a way that works.

June 22, 2022Griff — Just have to say thank you! I’ve purchased several courses from you and find your laid back and friendly presentation so helpful. I originally learned 3 finger picking from Dave Van Ronk and am now, a bit late in the game (at 78), working on improvising and soloing. Your videos are terrific and greatly appreciated!

November 15, 2022Thanks, Griff. I enjoy your videos and have bought a couple courses. I am primarily a Fender Jazz Bass guy, but I do some guitar. Question: Your string bends look effortless (or maybe it’s muscle). What gauge strings do you typically use? Do you ever down tune ala SRV?

October 27, 2024I gone through some pretty rough years here lately and decided to open an email that u sent as a gift and I’ve never been a true guitarists cause I never thought I was esentic (strange) in good way of course. Also not good speller either as you can see. I payed in a little 3 piece garage band in my early 20’s. We got real tight with all original music until hot shot guitarists kinda swooped in and took the band to place I didn’t like and of course their was partying going on and was trying stay off of dope. Iam not talking g about pot, iam glad they finally are legalizing it. But I don’t smoke but I worked alot of men during being a supervisor and t
I have worked alot men as a supervisor for other company’s and then of my own company of 18 men and I much rather see a man smoke at night eat and go to bed rather than a man drink a pint and wake still half drunk. Sorry I went off on a tangent, anyways I ki da got kicked out of the band with the excuse of they didn’t think I should be around it but that was BS. SOmusic left a real sower taste in my mouth but when open up your free gift it ignited something in me so sorry for the long spill l got excited about the guitar. So long way around things, thank you so so much. I can tell you’re a kind person by doing the things you do for free. Iam 62 year young man on a fix income but by God I will try to support you son. Your truly God bless you
