5 Easy Blues Solos

You're about to get the entire first solo from this course. Click here now to check out the other 4 solos and to get your copy of 5 Easy Blues Solos before they are gone!

Main Video Lesson

Slow Speed Play-Along

Full Speed Play-Along

One of the things you want to do before you even really get into this is just listen to the full speed (and maybe even the slow speed) play-along tracks to really get the melody in your head.

It's really helpful if you can hum along with it first, then try to learn the notes. And there is nothing faster than an 1/8th note and that's on purpose.

      Hi Grif
Your coaching is extremely helpful, I was wondering if you would consider changing the camera angle to face more toward the tuning pegs on the guitar so that I or we could see the tips of your fingers, and where they actually touch the fret board.
      Thanks Peter

EASY PEEZY! GLAD YOU PUT THE TABS THERE. JUST LISTENING, I GOT IT. IF YOUR EVER GET A CHANCE, GET THE CD WITH CLAPTON AND BB KING, “ON THE ROAD”. I SWEAR, THIS SOLO, SOUNDS JUST LIKE WHAT BB PLAYS IN ONE OF THE TUNES ON THE CD. ERIC DOSE A GREAT JOB OF COMPING WITH HIM. SO I’LL LISTEN TO THIS AND THEN ONCE I HAVE THE SOUND IN MY HEAD, ITS ALL READY FOR ME TO USE THE TABS AND GET THIS SOLO DOWN, PLUS I SAW MANY OTHER LICKS TO PLACE IN WITH A TRIPLET.
I THINK IT WOUD SOUND GOOD IN A SLOW BLUES. THANKS GRIFF, AS ALWAYS YOU GAVE ME SOME INSITE!

Practice time is something you schedule. If you try to “find” time to practice/play, something will always come along to interfere. Schedule the time and that makes it a part of your routine. You schedule the time you go to bed, the time you go to work, a doctor’s appointment; TV programs are scheduled, too, as are many things. Do the same with practice/playing time and it’s always at say, 7pm every day for a half hour.

I recommend you have an acoustic guitar on a portable guitar stand placed somewhere conspicuous that you pass by quite often. Then you will pick it up for a short practice whenever you are reminded by seeing the guitar and the urge takes you. Having a set schedule holds no appeal for me now I am retired, but perhaps that would work well for folks who have to go out to work.

Thanks for all you send out. I have 5 courses already and have come to realize at 70 I’m not going to be able to play multiple triplets flawlessly. Still working on BGU solo 4 at about 90%. I know the counting is something I need to make myself do, but I get bored with it quickly. When I play acoustic and sing the words to the song, it seems so much easier to get the timing right, no problem. Quicker results, of course I don’t play real fast songs. Zac Brown’s Knee Deep is about as fast as I have learned to play. That Boom Boom Boom video you sent out recently was fun to learn.

Just a thought; I read and saw a study done on those who play and study music that they are likely to keep an active and more productive mind than those who don’t in their later years. 8 1/2 yrs at the age of 51, I began learning guitar. I couldn’t keep or even knew what a 4/4 beat was. I studied each day and would play along at our church with the youth band just to help out and to learn to play along during their practice time. After learning enough basic chords and getting some timing down, I would get our churches worship band sheet music and sit back stage and try to play along. It took awhile, but I am happy to say that I now play every Sunday as an official worship team member for the past 5 yrs. Every day, I try to practice 30 minutes, putting aside TV, etc. It’s my “down time” I call it. I continue to learn and study and absorb as much as I can. Griff’s BGU course and his other DVD’s along with his free teachings have helped me to open up more and gain the confidence I need to challenge myself to be a better player. Don’t get discouraged Mr. Roggero! We all start off as beginner’s, and while I’ll never be a Griff or a Clapton, I feel blessed to have the love for music and to be able to reach for my guitar and find peace through music.

Seems like every video I check out now seems to suggest (…at least subliminally) ‘…see there!… this is what you’ve been neglecting!’ So for me, it’s gonna be a “head-first” dive back into SWS! The jewel I carried away from the main video lesson was how to facilitate switching from major to minor runs, with the change from index finger to ring finger (,,,or vice versa) to commence the run.

“So what have you been doing with the rest of your study time, Mr. Tarquinnian?” Well, truthfully Teach,…some advanced chords and rhythm techniques, and an exploration of Dorian, Aeolian, Phyrgian, and Mixolydian modes and techniques for lacing them through the major and minor pentatonic/blues scales.

I will however, as stated above, re-commit myself to the SWS work, as it is indispensable for getting to where I want to…and need to be as a guitarist.

    Ding Hoy!

Many thanks from one of your fans – across the pond – in Oxfordshire, UK.

I know you have a lot of things in your working week – but could you squeeze in some music theory. I have a real problem translating all the quarter notes, triplets, etc into the “One and a two and a three and a four”. I end up having to listing to each music bar on the video over and over to get it right. If I could figure out the timing from the music tabs that would be a huge step forward.

    Keep up the great work.

But, along with the lead it would certainly make me a better guitar player if you included a 12-24 bar video example of how to play the rythum guitar which is on the backing track. (Showing the intro & outro as well). If you are using a backing track from your 29 examples of rythum guitar course, please reference which rythum example you are using. In becoming a well rounded guitar player, it would be nice to be always be taught the rythum guitar part which accompanies each lead guitar example you present us in your various lessons whether in a purchased course or sent out via email.

It’s kinda like starting all over again except you already got a jump on the learning curve. I;ve already learned one thing, is that you don’t want to do this on an acoustic .

Griff, I’m also a pretty old guy. I’ll be 65 years old in November. BAck in high school, I used to be in a band, and we used to play surf music. The way you teach your listners about playing the “blues” is pretty easy to follow. You are a very good teacher, in my opinion. I enjoy watching and listening to you play the …”blues”.

I took up the guitar last October fully knowing that it would not be easy for me but beings that I’m retired I’d have some time to devote to it. I had no idea how fast I’d love it. I’m not very good but all things considered, I’ll get there. Just need to get my hands on a better guitar.
    Love the channel

I appreciate the simple way in which you lay out the progression. I will keep trying, I am a little more than a beginner but still struggling to get the paratonic down. I play some picking but mostly cords.
    Thank You
    Rick

I’m closing in on 73 and enjoying retirement, especially learning guitar. The recent purchase of a 2001 Strat has really upped my motivation. All those years in Jr. High and High School band significantly helps with the counting and basic music theory. I’m in full agreement with Griff. Count religiously until a metronome lives in the back of your head. It really makes everything so much easier. I don’t know who said it, but “if you can’t sing it or hum it, you can’t play it” becomes even more true as every year passes. And, before I forget, Welcome to Texas, Griff.

“Leave A Comment And Tell Me What You Think…” I think you’re a genius Griff. There’s only two of you on the big bad blues Internet that I would say that about. Thanks for helping us learn in a way that works.

Griff — Just have to say thank you! I’ve purchased several courses from you and find your laid back and friendly presentation so helpful. I originally learned 3 finger picking from Dave Van Ronk and am now, a bit late in the game (at 78), working on improvising and soloing. Your videos are terrific and greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Griff. I enjoy your videos and have bought a couple courses. I am primarily a Fender Jazz Bass guy, but I do some guitar. Question: Your string bends look effortless (or maybe it’s muscle). What gauge strings do you typically use? Do you ever down tune ala SRV?
